The Rudy Elmenhurst Story

Yolanda tells her story of how for a few years she was the wildest one out of her sisters. In high school, she had a lively personality and had lots of callers. In college, she couldn't keep the guys interested because she wouldn't sleep with them. She met Rudy Brodermann Elmenhurst, the third in her English class. Yolanda didn't feel like she belonged there because she was a foreign student. They began going out and they wrote a pornographic poem together. Yolanda was shocked when Rudy explained all the double meanings to her. At a party in the guy's dorm rooms, she refused to take drugs, in fear of Rudy taking advantage of her. After they broke up, Yolanda kept thinking that Rudy would come back to her during the spring dance, but Rudy had brought another girl.
Five years later in grad school she met Rudy but threw him out after realizing that he only wanted to have sex with her.

  1. thanks for the summary! I'm glad Yolanda kicked Rudy out instead of giving in and having sex with him. While I was reading this chapter, I saw a whole new side to Yolanda. Earlier in the book, Yolanda is described as "sweet" and "poetic," but I would have never guessed that she had a wild personality when she was in high school.

  2. Thanks Janet for the summary! It has reminded me of what happened in that chapter. I agree with both of you! It surprised me how Yolanda changed in personality, I almost couldn't believe what I was reading! However, I'm so glad how brave Yolanda was towards peer pressure. She definitely plays a great role model for others to look up to.

  3. She is a great role model! In this chapter, it teaches teens about peer pressure and how brave Yolanda was for not giving in. It also helps teens to be smart and aware of people trying to take advantage of girls for sex. Rudy was such a dirt bag, I am glad that Yolanda took a stand for herself. (:

  4. I was shocked to hear that Rudy would do this to Yolanda. I felt so bad for her, but at the same time I was proud of her. I was proud because she didn't give into pressure, she wouldn't do anything she wasn't ready to do. I agree with the both of you, Yolanda IS a great role model for girls, especially teenagers, to look up to. Many girls, mainly the ones our age, believe that they are IN LOVE with the guy you are currently seeing, and fear that if you don't do the things he wants you to do, he'll leave you, & you'll lose your "one true love" forever. If he really cared for you that much, he'd be willing to wait as long as it takes until YOU are ready.
